Flourish! 2014 Hackathon

About

Flourish! is a growing conference community focused on open source, tech and open culture. We wish to see Flourish! grow into a bigger and better vibrant community and thus this contest is being held. Participants will be creating a game or app pertaining to a specific theme.

Time & Location

Location: Fort Dearborn B

Date: April 5th, 2014
Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Time: 5:00 PM
Judging will start at 6:00 PM

Theme

The theme for the hackathon this year is nature. The theme is given in advance to help you prepare your minds around the thing(s) you may wish to build. You are not however; allowed to begin developing code or resources for your game or application until the conference begins. This is based on an honor system. Those who are found to be in violation of this will be no longer be eligible for judging. We do not believe it is possible for someone to build Halo 7 in such a short time, but maybe something like Flappy Bird... ;-)

Extra Challenge Criteria

Use only mouse or touch controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of things can I make in this competition?

The standard is either a video game, software application, website, tool; but if you have something else up your mind we won't stop you(as long as it is not too dangerous).

Will there be food provided?

Yes. Flourish will have a catered food. Paperwork is still being completed, but if you don't like what we have, there are many alternatives around UIC.

Should I bring my own equipment?

Yes, please bring your own laptop, tablet, etc. to the competition. We may have computers, but they may not be compatible with the software toolkits, IDEs, and features that you may decide to use and/or implement.

Am I required to post the source to my project?

No. Although Flourish! is a conference to promote open source software, hardware, and the like, we do not require you to open source your code. We highly encourage developers and participants to release your creations for the public to see, but no one will force you.

Can I form a team?

Yes, but teams must be no bigger than 3 people.

Do I have to stay for the entire hack-a-thon?

No, you are able to come and go as you please. The more time you are there, the better your project will probably be?

How can I sponsor this conference?

There is no minimum requirement needed to sponsor our hackathon so we take anything from free game copies to large sums of money. ;-) For more information on Sponsorship see our sponsorship page.
